Unit 1: What is Culture?

Unit Overview:

OK, let's face it: understanding a group of people who lived hundreds if not thousands of years ago is impossible, right? WRONG! happy_face.jpg Actually, you may find that they are more similar to us than you thought. That's because they share many of the same needs and wants that we have. The purpose of this unit is to give you a framework for comparing these various cultures to ours; a kind of historical binoculars we will call " cultural universals." What we'll find is more than just how they lived... but also what they believed in and how it shaped how they viewed their world.

Life Long Understandings:

  • Every society has a culture. It shapes how we see ourselves, others and the world around us.

  • Cultural universals are comment elements of all cultures that will aid in our understanding, comparing and contrasting of different cultures in different times.

  • Understand another person's culture helps us understand them.
